Corrosion-Resistant Actuators for Water & Wastewater

By the SJMC engineering team · Updated 2026-09-15

Valves and piping at a water treatment installation

Municipal water and wastewater service is chemically mild but biologically brutal. Hydrogen sulfide in headworks and sludge zones corrodes electronics and fasteners, valve pits flood seasonally, and most sites run unmanned — so the actuator is expected to report its own problems.

The consequence of under-specifying is not dramatic. It is a slow loss of position feedback, then a seized valve, then a wet well overflow that makes the local news. Specification discipline prevents all three.

IP68 for anything below grade

Valve pits flood. It is not a question of if, but when — storm season guarantees it.

  • Specify IP68 with submersible-rated cable glands for all pit-mounted valves; an IP66 unit standing in fifty millimeters of water is a scrap item.
  • Check that the IP68 rating includes immersion depth and duration, not just the code.
  • Above-grade installations in dry buildings are fine at IP66.

Epoxy, not paint — and stainless where it counts

H₂S atmospheres in headworks, sludge thickening and digester areas attack standard polyester coatings.

  • Minimum 80 µm epoxy coating for wastewater zones; two-coat systems for headworks.
  • Stainless fasteners and shafts are the €30 upgrade that saves a €3,000 actuator.
  • Aluminum enclosures with epoxy outperform painted steel in H₂S service — inspect references, not brochures.

Plan for remote monitoring from day one

Water utilities run unmanned sites. The actuator that reports its own position and faults is the cheapest SCADA integration you will ever buy.

  • Profibus-DP or HART with position feedback (JVX-03) turns a truck roll into a log entry.
  • Simple sites: 0-10 V / 4-20 mA with feedback keeps cost at the JVX-05 level.
  • Most plants ask for monitoring two years after purchase, when retrofit is painful. Specify the bus now even if you commission it later.

How SJMC fits water projects

From compact economy units for cost-driven municipal frameworks to intelligent bus-connected platforms for unmanned stations, SJMC quotes water duty with coating class and ingress protection as line items, not assumptions.

  • JVX-05 Compact economy — 50–2,000 Nm for the volume of a treatment plant's isolating valves — the best unit price in the range.
  • JVX-03 Intelligent — Profibus-DP / HART, position feedback and English HMI for unmanned-site diagnostics.
  • JVX-01 Quarter-turn — Epoxy-coated and stainless-hardware options for H₂S zones, to 100,000 Nm on penstock duty.

Frequently asked questions

Is IP68 necessary for valves inside a pump building?

No — IP66 is sufficient in dry rooms. IP68 is for pit-mounted and below-grade valves where flooding is a matter of when, not if.

Which coating do you recommend for digester gas areas?

A minimum 80 µm two-coat epoxy system with stainless fasteners and shafts. We quote this configuration as standard for sludge and digester duty.

Can the actuators report torque signatures for predictive maintenance?

The JVX-03 platform provides torque profiling and diagnostic counters over Profibus-DP or HART, which your SCADA can trend for jam detection and packing wear.

What is the warranty on water-sector deliveries?

Eighteen months as standard across the JVX range, with extended terms available in municipal framework contracts.
